Earth hour or TV hour?

Ah Sunday shifts. I’m just waiting on a call back for a story I’m writing so I thought I’d take this opportunity to blog a little.

Did anyone else turn the lights off at 8pm last night? I see Google “turned out the lights”. I though my computer had a virus or something when I saw the black home page. Great idea though!

I have to admit, I’m not the most green person in the world. But I do try. But I was looking forward to Earth Hour and the idea of people across the globe switching off lights.. I had decided to spend the night with my folks but I was running quite late and arrived seconds before 8pm. Unfortunately, I hadn’t warned my parents it was Earth Hour and barged in demanding they switched everything off…much to their confusion.

And the war of all wars broke out as my father refused to switch off the TV (I insisted on EVERYTHING being switched off) and I ended up sitting in the darkness in my old room…fuming with noise from the TV in the background.

But we later debated it and I stopped being annoyed. Of course I was irrational (should have warned them) but this just shows how spoilt we are by technology. We love our TVs, radios, even the internet. For some people, like my dad, an hour without TV just seemed like a nightmare.

He did raise a valid point though. Why one day? We should make more of an effort to switch off appliances and lights we are not using every day.

  1. Awww I forgot to turn off my lights! I feel so lame now, especially cuz it was staring at me on my facebook events thingy. I do make a concerted effort to conserve energy however, and this coming from a Trini is a great accomplishment.

  2. Haha. Never mind Mel…Glad you try normally although we’ll ignore the times you leave your fan heater on at your place in Birmingham - after all, you do hail from a tropical climate so I guess it’s necessary! :D

  3. Hey I remembered, but at my house we had the computer/tv debate, I thought they should be off, but my addicted husband insisted on keeping them on…and won, so we had a dark quiet house with the glowing light of the computer. Men and their toys!!!!

  4. What was it with 8pm? I think I was too busy watching ER (with just one small light on!) to notice if I’m honest….

  5. My other half Jeff turned to me in the living room and said its earth hour we must switch everything off. The following things entered my head…
    1) I am in the middle of cooking- pan on stove need lights to see food
    2) Earth what?????
The second one is especially bad because i am a geography teacher!
As i looked at him he read my mind and said i did tell you a week ago.
I looked at him lovingly and made a mental note to listen to him and read the paper more.
As for Earth hour it is a good idea but needs to be introduced into schools and offices so people know. My parents who are retired, watch the news all the time and read a paper still didn’t know anything about it. As usual planet problems dont get enough air time until things are seriously bad or it becomes a fashion item to help the cause. Oh well there is always next year… but please someone remind me!

  6. Well for earth hour I wasn’t at home … I went bowling with my friend … but it was cosmic bowling … meaning they turned off all the lights and had disco light and music playing and you can play as much games as you can. So I guess you can say that I participated in Earth Hour … just by bowling with the lights off, except for the disco one of course.
